There are four. Apples are always on the board, are worth 10 points times your level, add one segment and are the only food that levels you up. The other three appear briefly and flash before they expire: frost berries (15x) slow the snake down for a while, chillies (25x) add three segments instead of one, and golden eggs (40x) are worth the most and add no length at all.
It is not faster in game terms - the snake covers the same fraction of the board per second on every device. The board and the snake are sized from your screen, so a wide desktop gets a bigger snake moving more pixels per second rather than a tiny one crawling across a huge grid.
