The course is not stored anywhere - it is computed from the date string itself through a deterministic generator, which is why the archive can hand you any past day's course on demand and why nothing about it can ever go stale or be lost. Play is one continuous finger gesture. Drag back from the ball to set both angle and power, release to putt, and let hand-rolled 2D physics do the rest across walls and bumpers, slope zones that pull the ball as it crosses them, sand that strangles roll, ponds that cost a stroke, and gates that slide back and forth on a seeded phase so they are in the same place for everyone. Scoring uses a modified Stableford system, which is how real golf converts strokes-against-par into a number where higher is better: six points for an ace, four for a birdie, three for a par, nothing for a triple bogey, plus flat bonuses for finishing the round under par, for each hole-in-one, and for the length of your daily streak. There is no fail state - a bad hole is more strokes, never a game over, and a mercy cap at par plus five stops one sand trap from turning into a grind. What you keep is the streak and the scorecard, plus a Wordle-style emoji strip of the round to share. Practice mode replays any past day for fun and never touches the leaderboard, which is the one rule that keeps the daily board honest. The 9-hole layout is generated from the UTC date string by a deterministic seeded generator that runs on your own device, so every player on a given day gets byte-identical geometry - the same walls, the same slope angles, the same moving-gate phase. Nothing about the course is fetched from a server, which is also why the whole archive of past days is playable.
Strokes are converted to Stableford points, the system real golf uses to make golf scores ascending: 6 for an ace, 5 for an eagle, 4 for a birdie, 3 for a par, 2 for a bogey, 1 for a double and 0 for a triple or worse. Those are multiplied by 100 and added to three flat bonuses - 50 per stroke you finish under the course par, 250 per hole-in-one, and 20 per day of your streak up to 30. The round summary breaks all four lines out so you can see exactly where the number came from.
A bogey on every hole scores about 1,800. An all-par round is around 2,700 plus your streak bonus. Birdies push you past 3,600, and an under-par round with an ace and a long streak can clear 4,000. The median human round lands near the all-par band, so anything above 2,700 is a genuinely good day.
No, and that is deliberate. Replaying a past day's course from the archive never submits a score and never unlocks a streak or achievement - only today's round posts. Practice rounds do keep a local personal best per date for your own reference.
The same thing that happens in real golf: one penalty stroke, and the ball is placed on the marked drop point beside the hazard rather than back at the tee. There is also a mercy cap of par plus five strokes per hole, which auto-holes the ball so one bad hazard can never turn into an unbounded grind.
At 00:00 UTC, not local midnight, so the reset happens at the same instant for everyone. Your streak counts consecutive UTC days on which you completed a daily round; miss a day and it resets to zero. There is no streak freeze - the counter is unforgiving on purpose, which is what makes it worth protecting.
